ROME — Genoa secured safety on the final day of the longest-ever Serie A season, while Lecce dropped down to the second division on Sunday.

Genoa beat Hellas Verona 3-0 to finish four points ahead of Lecce and ensure a 14th consecutive season in the top Italian league. Lecce lost 4-3 to Parma,

Brescia and Spal had already been mathematically relegated.


The coronavirus-delayed season ended almost 12 months after it started on Aug. 24, 2019.

“The longest season in history ends today, in our country’s most difficult year in recent memory,” said Vincenzo Spadafora, Italy’s sports minister.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Jamiro Monteiro and Sergio Santos scored two minutes apart midway through the first half, Santos added a second goal just before halftime and the Philadelphia Union reached the semifinals of the MLS is Back tournament with a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Thursday night.

MILAN — Lazio kept alive its hopes of finishing second in Serie A with a 2-0 win against already-relegated Brescia in its penultimate match of the season on Wednesday.

Ciro Immobile also boosted his chances of clinching the top scorer award as he netted his 35th goal of the season, moving four clear of Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Vancouver Whitecaps goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau has undergone successful surgery on his fractured left thumb.

The 26-year-old Canadian international was injured in a July 19 goalmouth collision with Seattle’s Handwalla Bwana at the MLS is Back Tournament in Florida.

Axel Schuster, the Whitecaps CEO and sporting director, said Crepeau is expected to be back to full training in October. The surgery was Monday night.

Third-stringer Thomas Hasal, a 21-year-old from Saskatoon, replaced Crepeau at the tournament. Backup Bryan Meredith had left the team to be with his family in New Jersey after the death of his mother.

TORONTO — York 9 FC has signed Spanish forward Alvaro Rivero.

The 23-year-old was with the Real Madrid academy from age nine to 19. He joins the Canadian Premier League team from the CD Leganes reserve team.

Rivero, who arrived in Canada on Sunday, will join York 9 after fulfilling his 14-day quarantine.
