A funny thing happens when a professional sports team pulls off two minor miracles back to back: minor miracles start to feel inevitable.

The Denver Nuggets have made a habit in these playoffs of not just coming back from two 3–1 series deficits to the Utah Jazz and the Clippers, but massive in-game deficits as well. And so when the Los Angeles Lakers blew open Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals in the second quarter Friday night, it felt like just a matter of time until the Nuggets did what the Nuggets do.

But, of course, that feeling is

PORTLAND, Ore. — Hannah Green had to wait an extra day to open her title defence in the Cambria Portland Classic. Once she got going, about the only thing that slowed her was a 1 1/2-hour lightning delay and fading light.

Green shot a 6-under 66 on Friday at Columbia Edgewater for a share of the lead with Cydney Clanton in the LPGA Tour event reduced to 54 holes because of poor air quality caused by wildfires. Green was able to finish in fading light, while many other afternoon starters were still on the course when darkness suspended play.

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The final regular-season race of the Xfinity Series proved to be a preview of the upcoming playoffs as title contenders Chase Briscoe and Austin Cindric dominated yet another event.

Briscoe passed Cindric with five laps remaining Friday night at Bristol Motor Speedway, pouncing when Cindric lost power steering. Briscoe raced to his series-best seventh victory of the year while regular-season champion Cindric slipped to a third-place finish.

Ross Chastain, poised for a probable promotion to the Cup Series with Chip Ganassi Racing, followed Briscoe past Cindric in the waning laps and finished second.

LYON, France — Lyon’s winless run in the French league stretched to three games after being held by visiting Nimes to 0-0 on Friday.

Nimes goalkeeper Baptiste Reynet made a fine save in the 90th minute to deny Lyon substitute Tino Kadewere a late winner from Memphis Depay’s corner.

Earlier, Moussa Dembele thought he’d scored for the home side, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check as the ball had gone out of play.

Lyon, a Champions League semifinalist last season, started the league with a 4-1 win over Dijon thanks to Depay’s hat trick, but Rudi

CLEVELAND — Baker Mayfield found Odell Beckham Jr. and maybe some of his missing swagger.

Mayfield threw two touchdown passes, Nick Chubb ran for two scores and 124 yards and the Cleveland Browns gave coach Kevin Stefanski his first NFL victory Thursday night by beating the Cincinnati Bengals 35-30 on the NFL’s 100th birthday.

Mayfield connected with Odell Beckham Jr. o n a 43-yard scoring pass in the first half as the Browns (1-1) rebounded from an atrocious performance last week in Baltimore, where they were roughed up 38-6 by the Ravens and looked mostly inept in Stefanski’s debut.
