With the return of the Bundesliga this weekend, many professional sports leagues across the planet will be paying close attention to how the restart pans out.
Major League Soccer will surely be one of the leagues watching the Bundesliga’s protocols. With MLS said to be looking at Orlando as a potential host city for games, it will be intrigued at how German soccer handles playing matches during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Even for our guys, it really is kind of the test for many of us who are watching,” said Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney on Writers Bloc on Sportsnet 590 The FAN. “I know our guys are anxiously awaiting the games to start this weekend [to] kind of just see where it’s at and how players are responding emotionally to being back out in competition.
“We’ve seen a lot of the protocols that they have put in place. I think that gives us something to look at and we have to assess how it all works out as they embark on restarting the season.”

The Bundesliga has been extra careful with its health protocol to ensure the safety of its players and staff. That is why it could be the leading example for other leagues to restart.
But even with more than 86,000 deaths in the U.S., per the New York Times, MLS may return soon.
“We have some vision of what might be some sort of a competition in the future not too far,” said Vanney. “There is some light at the end of the tunnel in terms of playing, so guys are just continuing to try and just stay fit.”
If the Orlando concept is approved, games would be staged at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex and teams would reportedly begin training on June 1.
TFC is currently doing individualized training at their facilities with certain restrictions in place. Players train in quadrants of the field three days a week in a “very controlled environment,” according to Vanney.
If there are games on the horizon, it seems that TFC is prepared for a quick return. Where those matches will be played remains a mystery.
