Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning favourites in Sunday charity match

More golf action is on the schedule for this weekend as Tiger Woods teams up with Peyton Manning to take on Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady on Sunday in a two-on-two charity clash as strong -230 favourites at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

A follow up to their head-to-head matchup in November 2018, Woods, Mickelson, and their NFL quarterback partners will be aiming to raise money for COVID-19 pandemic relief when they tee off at The Match: Champions for Charity on Sunday afternoon.

The 18-hole made-for-television event is set to take place at Woods’ home course at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. That has contributed to the rise to the top of the odds at online betting sites for Woods and Manning. However, the 15-time major winner has seen little action this season, and turned in a disappointing 68th-place finish in his last outing at the Genesis Invitational.

Mickelson also struggled early on this year, missing the cut in four of his past five tour appearances. However, Mickelson emerged victorious in his head-to-head clash with Woods 18 months ago, claiming victory in a marathon matchup that needed four playoff holes to settle.

While Manning and Brady have played down golf skills in media interviews leading up to the event, the two NFL quarterbacks are capable of holding their own on the links. Manning has likely enjoyed more time on the course since retiring from the NFL in 2016, and reportedly sports a handicap of approximately 6. In addition, Manning has played with Woods before, with the duo teaming up at both the 2005 Bay Hill Pro-Am and the 2009 Quail Hollow Championship.

Brady’s continued focus on the gridiron as he prepares to make his debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers likely means he has spent a little less time swinging the clubs. The six-time Super Bowl champion sports a handicap of approximately 8, but reportedly shot 106 in his last round at Medalist.

While the calibre of play in Sunday’s contest may not be at the major tournament level, the wide array of betting props covering the action certainly are. Manning is set as a narrow -130 favourite to outdrive Brady on the first hole, while the odds of Brady hitting the fairway in regulation on the first hole sit at -120.

All four competitors will be mic’d up for the event, fuelling -205 odds of at least one player saying “Gronk”. However, the odds of someone mentioning the word “deflate” lag at +150, and a mention of Manning’s famous call word “Omaha” is listed back at +225.
