NBA teams operating G League franchises reportedly expect the rest of the minor-league season will soon be cancelled, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Malika Andrews.

The regular season for the G League would have run until the end of March, with playoffs happening into April.

Players have been informed that they will be paid through until the end of the schedule despite the cancellation, Wojnarowski and Andrews report.

Currently, both the NBA and G League seasons are on hiatus as a means of reducing mass gatherings in the United States — a step that experts say is essential to stemming the spread of COVID-19.

Besides the issues arising from the the season being suspended, Wojnarowski points to the G League traveling on commercial airlines — which have been significantly impacted by the spread of the novel coronavirus — and that they “generally are money-drains for NBA teams” as reasons why it’s harder for the season to continue on.

Wojnarowski said there is no imminent announcement planned and the 28 teams have been told to stay in their respective towns for now.

Neither the NBA nor the G League have a set timeline for when they will return to action, and all professional North American sports leagues are heeding the advice of experts in planning their next steps.

On Sunday night, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new advisory, recommending the postponement or cancellation of all events that would have 50-plus people for the next eight weeks, giving a rough timeline for the absolute earliest professional North American sports could return.
