Report: Amar’e Stoudemire joining Nets as Steve Nash’s assistant coach

Amar’e Stoudemire has reportedly agreed to a deal to join the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Stoudemire and Nets head coach Steve Nash enjoyed some of their most productive seasons on the court during their tenure with the seven-seconds-or-less Phoenix Suns teams, which were known for their up-tempo offence, and will now look to replicate that success behind the bench in Brooklyn.

The duo led Phoenix to six straight regular seasons with winning records, a stretch in which they reached the Western Conference Finals three times but were never able to advance to the NBA Finals.

A six-time all star, Stoudemire also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games. Throughout his 846-game career, he averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Since retiring in 2016, his off-court ventures have included starting a record label, clothing line, acting and a series of children’s books for Scholastic Press.

This will mark Stoudemire’s first time coaching at the NBA level. His focus will be on player development, Charania reported.

Nash was hired by the Nets in September to take over head coaching duties from Jacque Vaughn, who had been the interim head coach since March when the team decided to part ways with Kenny Atkinson. Vaughn stayed on the staff as the lead assistant coach.

The Nets, coming off a 35-37 season, enter the 2020-21 campaign with high expectations, buoyed by the presumptive return of injured superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
