Gegard Mousasi won Bellator’s vacant middleweight title with a unanimous decision victory over reigning welterweight champion Douglas Lima in the main event of Belltor 250.
The 185-pound division’s former champion, Rafael Lovato Jr., relinquished the title earlier this year after being diagnosed with a brain condition called cerebral cavernoma.
Mousasi is now a two-time champion after initially losing his belt via majority decision to Lovato at Bellator 223 in June of 2019. It was the lone blemish so far in Mousasi’s Bellator career and his only loss in his past 11 fights dating back to 2016.
The 36-year-old from the Netherlands signed with Bellator in 2017 when riding a winning streak that saw him finish Thiago Santos, Vitor Belfort, Uriah Hall and Chris Weidman in the UFC. Mousasi also holds notable wins over Rory MacDonald, Lyoto Machida, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Dan Henderson, Ovince Saint Preux, Rafael Carvalho and Mark Hunt.
Mousasi expects his next title defence to be against Jon Salter, who is 8-1 in Bellator and, just like Mousasi, is 10-1 in his last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, Lima will go back down to 170 pounds and defend the title that he won from Rory MacDonald one year ago. Lima is 13-3 fighting in Bellator’s welterweight division including wins over Michael “Venom” Page, Andrey Koreshkov, Lorenz Larkin and Paul Daley.
