Jazz’s Rudy Gobert working on relationship with Donovan Mitchell

Utah Jazz centre Rudy Gobert says he’s working on improving his relationship with teammate Donovan Mitchell and that the two are united in their pursuit of a championship.

“It’s true that we didn’t speak for a while after this but we did speak a few days ago,” Gobert said in an interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks on Sunday. “We’re both ready to go out there and try to win a championship with this team.”

Yahoo! Sports’s Chris Haynes reports the conversation Gobert is referencing occurred Saturday and that “there’s more work to be done, but the chat is a good sign they’re working on turning the page.”

The relationship between the two Jazz stars was fractured after both tested positive for COVID-19 in March, with Gobert’s reported recklessness in the days before his positive test causing the rift. Gobert did apologize later for his actions, but Mitchell told Good Morning America on March 16 that “it took a while for me to cool off.”

The two have since recovered from the virus.

The Athletic reported on Friday that “The Jazz have already begun working on the Mitchell-Gobert relationship, but sources say Mitchell remains reluctant to fix what might have been broken.” However, Gobert’s comments Sunday seem to indicate an opportunity to repair the relationship exists.

“It’s all about being a professional. Everyone has got different relationships… it’s never perfect. People that are married, it’s never perfect,” Gobert said. “So me and my teammate, no it’s far from perfect but at the end of the day, we both want the same thing. It’s winning. We are both grown men and we’re going to do what it takes to win.”
