FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The Patriots have had trouble finishing off games at times this season. They got an assist from Mother Nature to help close out their biggest victory.

Cam Newton threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score and the Patriots fought through rain and wind to hold off the Baltimore Ravens 23-17 on Sunday night.

Damien Harris ran for a career-high 121 yards to help the Patriots (4-5) win consecutive games for the first time this season. Newton was 13 of 17 for 118 yards. His touchdown pass, on a short sprint-out to Rex Burkhead in the

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis is reportedly declining his $28.7-million player option for next season to become an unrestricted free agent, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Earlier reporting indicated that Davis intended to decline his player option and then sign a long-term deal with the Lakers. It is not clear if that is still his intention, or if he will test the free agent market.

The 27-year-old thrived in his first season alongside LeBron James in Los Angeles, averaging 26.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks over 62 regular-season games. Davis improved his production during the playoffs, … Read More

LONDON — Dominic Thiem made sure this year’s ATP Finals didn’t begin the same way last year’s ended.

Thiem outlasted Stefanos Tsitsipas in a rematch of the 2019 final, beating the defending champion 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 Sunday in the opening singles match of the tournament inside a largely empty O2 Arena.

In the late match, Rafael Nadal had a much easier time against newcomer Andrey Rublev, beating the Russian 6-3, 6-4 in just 1 hour, 17 minutes. Nadal is looking to cap a season in which he earned his record-equaling 20th Grand Slam title and 1,000th match win on

ROME — Three years after an embarrassing failure to qualify for the World Cup, Italy is back in contention with the best in Europe.

England, meanwhile, is already out of contention for the Nations League finals with one round of matches still to play.

An Italy squad badly hit by the coronavirus still managed to beat Poland 2-0 on Sunday, putting the Azzurri in control of their group, while England was beaten 2-0 by top-ranked Belgium.

Another win at Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday will see Italy hosting the four-team finals in October — just a few months after hosting the opening

If there’s one thing the Masters is about, it’s invoking emotion – even from someone as laid back as Dustin Johnson.

Johnson won the Masters by five shots Sunday thanks to a record-setting 20-under par score. On 18, when he tapped in for par, his brother and caddie, Austin, was choked up. The elder Johnson didn’t even mark his ball to savour the moment – just putted out and won.

This, coming just minutes after the TV cameras missed him hitting his approach to the 72nd hole because of how quickly he was playing.

But finally, in a post-round interview

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Nothing ever comes easily for Dustin Johnson in the majors, except for when he slipped his arms through that Masters green jacket Sunday.

Johnson overcame a jittery start that conjured memories of past majors he failed to finish off. He turned that into a command performance, making sure this one-of-a-kind Masters with no fans also had no drama.

Not even close.

Johnson tapped in for par on the 18th for a 4-under 68 to finish at 20-under 268, breaking by two shots the record set by Tiger Woods in 1997 and matched by Jordan Spieth in 2015.

Bernhard Langer has wrapped up a remarkable performance for the ages at Augusta National.

After becoming the oldest player to make the cut in the Masters, the 63-year-old German closed with a 1-under 71 to finish at 3 under overall.

Even though Langer ranked last among the 60-weekend players in driving average (260 yards), his experience and touch around the greens allowed him to finish ahead of plenty of younger players.

One of those Langer beat was Bryson DeChambeau, the longest hitter on the PGA Tour and the betting favourite coming into the week. They played together on Sunday, with … Read More

AUGUSTA, Ga. — This was a very imperfect 10 for Tiger Woods.

The defending Masters champion recorded a septuple-bogey 10 on No. 12 in the final round on Sunday, plunking three balls into Rae’s Creek in front of the green on Augusta National’s signature par 3.

It was the highest score on any hole in his professional career. And the carnage at Amen Corner dropped him from 3 under to 4 over for the tournament, with only a late string of birdies saving him from his matching his worst Masters round ever.

“This sport is awfully lonely sometimes,” Woods said.
