The Montreal Impact defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-2 at BC Place on Sunday after both teams were reduced to 10 men in a wild contest.

The victory keeps the Impact’s chances of reaching the Canadian Championship final intact. They now have to defeat the Whitecaps by at least a two-goal margin to advance to the final.

The Canadian MLS representative – either Montreal or Toronto FC – will face the winner of the Canadian Premier League’s Island Games in the Canadian Championship final.

NAPA, Calif. — Stewart Cink’s long wait is finally over. He doesn’t have to worry about being cast as a villain, either, as was the case when Cink outlasted fan favourite Tom Watson to win the 2009 British Open.

Sparked by a strong short game, Cink won the season-opening Safeway Open at 47 years old Sunday for his seventh PGA Tour victory and first since that win at Turnberry 11 years ago.

Making it more special? Cink won with 23-year-old son Reagan alongside as his caddie, with wife Lisa — in her fifth year of cancer remission — watching from

NEW ORLEANS — Drew Brees and Tom Brady, the two leading passers in NFL history, couldn’t muster vintage performances in the first NFL game featuring two starting quarterbacks in their 40s.

But while Brees avoided game-turning mishaps with an offence he’s led since 2006, Brady suffered some costly cross-ups with his new team.

Brady threw two interceptions in his Tampa Bay debut, Alvin Kamara scored touchdowns running and receiving, and the New Orleans Saints beat the Buccaneers 34-23 on Sunday.

“I made some just bad, terrible turnovers,” Brady said. “I obviously have got to do a lot better job.”

NEW YORK — A U.S. Open unlike any other finished unlike any other — with an unprecedented fifth-set tiebreaker as Dominic Thiem became the first man in 71 years to win the final after dropping the opening two sets.

So close to defeat in a nearly empty Arthur Ashe Stadium — fans were banned because of the coronavirus pandemic — Thiem slowly but surely turned things around against a faltering Alexander Zverev and pulled out a 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory at Flushing Meadows for his first Grand Slam title.

The match ended with both men fighting leg

MUGELLO, Italy — Lewis Hamilton won a hectic Tuscan Grand Prix on Sunday to clinch his 90th Formula One win and move one behind Michael Schumacher’s record.

The first F1 race on a Mugello track with super-fast corners usually used by MotoGP riders was incident-packed throughout. Two crashes on the first seven laps saw six drivers go out, and a red flag suspended the race for the first time after the second one.

A second red flag late on following Canadian Lance Stroll’s heavy crash meant another grid restart — on Lap 46 of 59 — and gave Valtteri Bottas
