PALERMO, Italy — Top-seeded Petra Martic and fourth-seeded Anett Kontaveit advanced to the semifinals of the first tour-level event in five months at the Palermo Ladies Open on Friday.

Martic beat qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) then Kontaveit defeated Italian teenager Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

The other semifinal will feature Fiona Ferro of France against local favourite Camila Giorgi of Italy.

The Washington Football Team has released running back Derrius Guice after learning about multiple domestic violence-related charges, according to a statement from the team.

On Friday evening, the Washington Post reported that Guice, 23, had been arrested on domestic violence-related charges, including one count of strangulation — which is a felony.

Guice turned himself in to authorities at the Loudoun Adult Detention Center on Friday in Virginia.

The Washington Football Team first learned of a potential “incident” involving Guice on Thursday. After releasing Guice, they issued the following statement:

Canadian featherweight Kyle (The Monster) Nelson, whose last fight was derailed by visa issues, will face Billy Quarantillo on a Sept. 12 UFC card in Las Vegas.

The 29-year-old from Huntsville, Ont., was slated to meet Sean (The Sniper) Woodson at a catchweight of 150 pounds June 27 in Las Vegas. But Nelson, given less than three weeks notice, was unable to get his visa in time.
