INDIANAPOLIS — The postponement of the Indianapolis 500 from Memorial Day weekend until late August because of the coronavirus pandemic has created a “void” for businesses near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that rely on spending by race fans and tourists, local officials said.

Connie Harris, executive director of the Greater Speedway Area Chamber of Commerce, said May is usually a busy month for restaurants and businesses in the Marion County town of Speedway, which sees its population jump from about 12,000 residents to more than 200,000 during race weekend.

But Chris Gahl, Visit Indy’s senior vice-president for marketing and communications,

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu appears to be over her injury woes and ready to get back on the tennis court.

Andreescu is slated to make her first tournament appearance since last October as one of 16 players launching the inaugural Credit One Bank Invitational in June.

The Tennis Channel made the announcement on Friday, with the tournament set to start on June 23 in Charleston, S.C.

The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., was hoping to defend her 2019

We celebrate greatness and fawn over the rare and gifted. We get distracted by showmanship and carried away by drama.

That’s the way the NBA – hell, all of sports – is now and you can’t knock it.

It’s the formula that has taken what not all that long ago was a collection of small-to-medium, family-run businesses that represented a night out for local fans, and turned it into a multi-billion industry with Hollywood-level marketing machinery that values the ability to connect with consumers in China on a smart phone as much as bums in seats in Memphis.

But what

There’s a point, somewhere after being great at their sport, where athletes become something more than just exceptionally talented. They disrupt our assumptions. They become the ‘but’ in how their sports are understood — NHL players don’t score 200 points in a season, but there’s Wayne Gretzky, doing it three seasons in a row; undersized point guards from Canada don’t win prestigious NBA hardware, but there’s Steve Nash, winning back-to-back MVP awards.

This point is where heroes are made.

Few humans ever reach it. And those who’ve been there, who know what it takes to ascend that high, know intimately

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR had been planning sweeping changes for 2021 in hopes of finding new fans and adding some energy to a staid, stale schedule.

The coronavirus pandemic put those plans on hold and NASCAR is frantically trying to recover from a 10-week layoff.

So far, the stock car series is succeeding.

NASCAR came up with a health plan that allowed it to resume racing last Sunday at Darlington Raceway, the first of 20 events scheduled in seven Southern states through June 21. Although spectators are not permitted, making for eerie, empty venues, the racing itself has delivered.

The Seattle Seahawks are signing running back Carlos Hyde to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.

Hyde can reportedly earn up to $4 million on the deal.

Hyde, 29, joins a backfield in Seattle which already includes Chris Carson, Rashaad Penny and Travis Homer. The Seahawks also selected DeeJay Dallas in the fourth round of last month’s draft.

Both Carson and Penny are coming off season-ending injuries, while Homer made up one half of Seattle’s running back duo to finish the 2019 campaign alongside veteran Marshawn Lynch, who is currently a free agent.
