When restrictions on public gatherings to combat the novel coronavirus lift, Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum knows his sport will be ready.

Until then, he hopes that amateur golfers follow the lead of professionals and stay home.

Applebaum spoke about golf’s unique position as a pastime that can lend itself to social distancing on Saturday as he himself was in a 14-day period of self-isolation after attending the PGA Tour’s Players Championship in early March. He’s seen articles and online discussions about how golf is relatively safe during the COVID-19 pandemic but he still advises against playing for now.

Real Madrid’s former president Lorenzo Sanz died on Saturday, with the 76-year-old having been hospitalised after contracting coronavirus.

Former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz has died at the age of 76 after contracting the coronavirus.

Sanz was president of Madrid between 1995 and 2000, presiding over two Champions League triumphs, one LaLiga title and the Spanish giants winning the now-defunct European Cup Winners’ Cup.

He had been admitted to hospital this week with coronavirus-like symptoms, the pandemic having sent Spain and other nations into lockdown.

MADRID — Former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz died Saturday from the new coronavirus, his family said. He was 76.

Sanz had been in intensive care since the beginning of the week while being treated for the virus.

Sanz presided over Madrid from 1995 until 2000, leading the club to two European titles, a Spanish league title and a Spanish Super Cup title.

Under Sanz, Madrid ended a 32-year drought in Europe by winning its seventh European trophy in 1998.

AC Milan’s technical director and club legend Paolo Maldini has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced Saturday.

After finding out that he was in contact with a person who had tested positive for the coronavirus, the 51-year-old started to show symptoms and was tested on Friday. His son Daniel, who plays for AC Milan’s youth team also tested positive.
